| Apparently Shirley Beckett's "Weather Bulletin," an email printed in NOLAFugees #4, generated no end of consternation. From the many emails we've received, we offer you one from Renen Barrett, a Fugee living in North California, who penned the following: |

We've had no end of response to the first installment of J.Moss' "Secession!" Here are a few of examples: | ||||||||||||||||

In response to Shirley Beckett, I lament your terrible situation and commend your people for their hearty rugged demeanor. However, The blizzard sounds like somthing you more or less deal with every year and i'm guessing every other truck there has a snow plow attached to the front bumper 10 months a year for that very reason. Blizzards are a fact of life one has to contend with for the luxury of living in such a socially functional utopia such as South Dakota. So your roads are plowed, the juice gets cut back on and life goes on. Now imagine being exiled from your city for a few weeks. Did you bring everything that was important to you? maybe not if you thought you were only going to be gone a few days. Maybe you had a couple thousand dallors in savings because your such a responsible person, but you could'nt get to that money because your financial institution is not honoring your account because it's underwater. So you have the cloths on your back, the money in your wallet and that is the sum of your worldly possessions. $2000.00 of Fema money solves a couple of temporary problems, but you still have nothing. Shirley that is not your reality. Your quilting session was inturrupted long enough for you to somehow draw a parrelell between your temporary inconvenience and the total loss of property, life, culture, and livelihood that we have just experienced. Tomarrow you will wake up in your bed and eat in your own kitchen, many New Orleanians will not know those comforts for some time to come. Maybe 2g's >>Renen Barrett |

| no US = no $$$$ <MrsMcGillikuty> 2006-01-14 10:40:14 If NOLA wasn't part of the US you wouldn't be getting the BILLIONS of dollars that you are from the rest of us. >>We have a deal for you. You keep your money, we'll keep our offshore revenue and port fees. Capital isn't created ex nihil. Have you seen your fucking budget deficit? The rest of you can get pimped by the Fed; we want out. And don't come to us if you need an abortion. |

| Subject: Louisiana
Just for the record, I agree with your position, although I am in Shreveport -- a lifelong Shreveporter with strong family connections to New Orleans and a New Orleanian wife to boot. Fact is, north Louisiana has PLENTY in common with south Louisiana, especially with New Orleans. I've always said about Shreveport that it is like Baton Rouge except with a central business district, a viable economy, and a personality. Regardless, please don't make generalizations about the northern part of the state -- it is more on your side than you think. In fact, this part of the state is 100% on the side of New Orleans and the coast (I, for one, would like to know why the Feds sent so many people to Texas while inexplicably rejecting Shreveport's offers of housing and even jobs). We are ALL Louisianians and as such we need to stick together and unite, celebrating our differences rather than disdaining them and finding the common ground we share (and there's more of it than not). All of Louisiana is under attack and a big chunk of our population has left the state. We need them back, whether up here, down there, or someplace in between. The Feds have screwed over Louisiana and shown us exactly what they think of us. Let's all join together and tell the Feds what we think of THEM, too. |

| Subject: New Orleans Your city was once a really interesting one, but it stopped being worthwhile a long time before the horrors of katrina. I hate that so many people have lost so much due to katrina. However, new orleans has been a hellhole for several years now, stop asking for government handouts. Your restaurants were overrated, your crime and government dishonesty made the city one of the worst in the usa. My last trip to new orleans I was hasseled by thugs almost in front of the montelone. start facing reality and get a life. >>ls |

| NOLAFugees.com responds: Please allow us to apologize for the incident in front of the Monteleone. As we recall, it was late, and it hadn't been a very good day flipping birdies. We agree with you wholeheartedly: our crime and dishonesty did make us one of the worst cities in the nation, which is why we advocate Secession-- the truth is that we do not deserve the largesse of the United States. As for facing reality, we invite you to come down and check out the city for yourself. When you get back home, do please let us know how reality is going. |

| SUBJECT: Louisiana Recovery Oil Tax (LaROT) Not a pretty name but it's reality -- Get passed the smell and its not too bad. We need a reliable source of income to do the projects needed in Louisiana. It has been made apparent to us that the Fed Gov cannot or will not commit long term funds to restore Louisiana. We except this. We need to do it ourselves. There is a way. Louisiana has grounds to claim a 10 mile offshore border, like Texas and Fla. I have started a Petition to present to Louisiana Law makers to 1.claim the 10 miles and the royalties from the Nat resourses from it. 2. Put all new revenues into an open transparrent account trhat can only be used for coastal restoration, freshwater devertion projects and Levees accross south Louisiana. 3. Tax oil and nat gas enough to sustain projects that are ready to start, but cannot because of lack of funding. What will be the commitment of the federal government to keep these projects going in 5 or 10 years from now. Less than 4 months after the worse natural desaster it is aready backing off. I understand that the american people do not want to commit funds to a sinking hole and that it is only the people of Louisiana that concider this sinking hole to have value. If the fed Gov puts up the bill it will only cause a larger deficit. It will be our grandkids trhat would pay for the desaster, they will have their own desasters to pay for. please ck out the Petiton and websight - if u agree sign it and pass it on. http://www.gopetition.com/online/7792.html For more information see our web-sight www.louisianarot.com It tries to give ways to provide reliable funding for projects needed for south Louisiana >>DTurk |
