The New Morality

An Irish Chanel resident questions the equality of Post-Katrina reparations.
Dear NOLAfugees,

Why is it that someone who had nothing but a crack pipe and fake fingernails before the storm gets $16,000 from FEMA and a person with a job and a modest home with major damages gets $5,200 when the roof alone costs over $6,000?

--Sick About It on What’s Left of Sixth Street

Dear Sick,

Your ire is understandable, given the difficulties we've all faced over the past seven months. But let's put your question in the proper perspective: Do you know how much detailed, airbrushed acrylic nails cost these days? Now consider all the Vietnamese who work so hard on those detailed designs.  Don’t you think they deserve a piece of that FEMA pie? How else are they going to recoup from the loss of their homes and nail spas in N.O. East?

As for their customers, "the fake nail wearing pipe-hitters" to whom you so overgenerally refer, we ask you to ponder this: If the crack-smoking, fake-nail-wearing women are denied their share, then doesn't everybody suffer?  Space does not permit a discussion of the black-market cocaine trade, and the losses incurred by that cottage industry since August 29, 2005. Suffice to say that we need to do all we can to welcome all commerce back to our fair city, be they drug dealers, Texans, or carpet-bagging contractors.

You’re Uptown, so why not take what cash you have to Belladonna day spa and get yourself the pedicure you deserve? Then, rather than following up your session with a half-caf latte across the street at CC's, take a walk down Seventh Street to Chippewa, back towards the river. Speak with "Tee;" you'll recognize his house by the shoes hanging from the powerlines out front. Get you a twenty rock; Tee will be happy to lend you a piece (assuming you don't have one already). Then fire it up and see how you feel about the whole issue. You may realize it probably doesn't matter much either way. Most importantly,

When you see these, you'll know you're at Tee's place.

Follow your heart. And pray Tee gives you a pipe this clean.
