White Fright

LukeFollowing the
St. Bernard Parish's passing of a law that prohibits property rental to non-blood relatives, the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center filed suit, claiming housing discrimination (St. Bernard parish was 93%
white pre-K). Proponents of the law argue that they want a community of homeowners, not renters. Correspondent Lauren Bienvenue met with James Perry of the GNOFHAC and Parish Council Chairman Lynn Dean to get the full story.

Hostage Situation at Pal's

There have been plenty of times we've left Pal's Lounge and almost driven into the Bayou St. John, and on occasion there have been times when a trip to Pal's has ended on the hardwoods wrapped up in a sheet and weeping. But it hadn't occurred to us to bring the funk to Pal's, as it did to a semi-suicidal regular two weeks ago. Bill Lavender happened to be just down the street as a pseudo-hostage situation unfolded like a bad version of "Who's on First."

Downswing: Online Poker and the New Orleans Economy

On October 13, President Bush signed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, buried as it was behind a port security bill. While Bill Frist, who sponsored the UIGEA, may have our souls' Judgement Day ascension in mind, NOLAFugees Senior Editor Joe Longo looks at exactly how the law truely screws the pro- and semi-pro poker player.

A Tale of Two Garden Districts

You can never quite tell what is going on in the UPT; one block you're sipping Pomerol and sampling the brie with the philanthropic set, the next you're getting hit up for singles by a guy in a flagman's vest who scares the shit out of you. Lisa Haviland and Sheri McKee provide a composite glimpse into life in the Garden District.

John Edwards: Getting Rid of the Wires
LukeJohn Edward's believes that rebuilding New Orleans requires creative solutions, among them going Green and doing away with overhead power lines. We're all about it, but only if he can get stop people from getting shot in the street outside the NOLAFugees offices. By Andrea Boll.

LukeVinny Mendoza: 20/20 Vision When Dr. Vinny Mendoza looks at the wreckage that is New Orleans and sees a potential city on the hill by the year 2020 (despite being so far below sea-level). All we have to do is show some respect and work hard. The path to Enlightenment? Apparently it goes through Japan.
