Responding to criticism and a subsequent lawsuit over its ‘blood relative’ rental requirements filed by Greater New Orleans Fair Housing, St. Bernard Parish Council members called a press conference to say that the intentions of the ordinance have been greatly misunderstood.
“For too long St. Bernard Parish has been perceived as a white enclave seeking to segregate itself from Orleans Parish,” said council member Craig Taffaro of the Parish whose homeowners are 93% white. “This ordinance, rather than seeking to enforce segregation, as has been perceived, hopes to give our black neighbors a tangible incentive to literally join the family.”
“We call on our black brethren to marry and procreate with the white sons and daughters of St. Bernard Parish,” said council member Joey DiFatta. “Then we’ll be happy to rent to you.”
James Perry, executive director of GNO Fair Housing, was on hand to apologize for his misreading of the ordinance’s intent.
“Now that I understand the true spirit of the law,” Perry announced. “GNO intends to rethink our strategy regarding ensuring fair and equitable housing in St. Bernard Parish. I now understand my moral duty, and I urge all of our supporters of nondiscriminatory housing to make similar interracial love. Not for our gain, but for the future of our illegitimate children.”
DiFatta and Taffaro concurred with Perry’s initiative.
“Give me a project bitch,” DiFatta said, to which Taffaro added: “give me a hood rat trick.”
