Entergy to Sponsor Lights Out Against Crime

An Entergy New Orleans worker, who asked to remain anonymous, cut transformer lines along O.C. Hailey Tuesday.
In an effort to contribute to the battle against the sharp increase in violent crime this summer in the city of New Orleans, Entergy announced today it will be cutting off electricity in the designated high crime hotspots.

“You can’t shoot what you can’t see,” said Entergy of New Orleans CEO Dan Packer. “If I could block Central City from the sun to get a handle on things, I would.”

Critics of Entergy claim the initiative is an attempt to abdicate a portion of its responsibility to provide reliable electricity to all parts of the city.

“At this point we have no reason to believe that Entergy is acting in good faith,” said Evelyn Harrison of the New Orleans Consumer Protection Law Center.

In response to the criticism, Packer replied: “Good faith is optional, but belief in quasi-public utility monopolies is mandatory.”
