Bywater Woman’s High Ride Spoiled by Flirtatious National Guardsmen

Lindsay Meyers' received a lesson in human rights, even as she suffered a buzzkill while riding her bike in the 9th ward.
At seven p.m. Monday night, Lindsay Meyers did what she usually does—smoked a bowl of kind bud and hopped on her bicycle.

“I was enjoying the evening air. You know how it gets cooler after a certain hour and you’re like so psyched to go outside for a little bit? You know how when you ride a bike you can just like feel the breeze under your arms?” Meyers remarked and then coughed. She continued, “And then there are the sounds, the bugs making that noise, like a chirp almost, can bugs chirp? And the people out on their stoops, the smell of barbecue in the air. It’s a total sensory experience.”

A resident of Gallier Street in New Orleans’ Bywater neighborhood, Meyers was heading south on N. Rampart when she was approached by two national guardsmen in a Humvee.

“I don’t really like to plan my rides. I just kind of go, you know? But when I saw that Hummer, man I was so freaked: I felt like I made a wrong turn.”

According to Meyers, one of the guardsmen offered her a ride in the Hummer in exchange for a spin on her fat-tired, banana seat bicycle. Afraid the guardsmen would discover that she had just smoked marijuana, Meyers politely smiled and pedaled away.

“I thought for sure they were going to search me,” Meyers said. “And find what I don’t know, maybe resin in my pockets. Man, that got my blood pumping, and it kind of ruined my high.”

Meyers then retreated to Markey’s Bar where friends and neighbors assured her the guardsmen were just being flirtatious.

Apparently the guardsmen were not looking for "that fire."

Meyers wisely turned down the guardsman's offer of a ride, if you know what I mean.
